A root canal is a procedure used to treat a badly infected tooth. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most common types of dental emergencies.

By the time you may need a root canal, the bacteria causing the infection has likely already made its way down the tiny canals of the tooth. This can cause high levels of pain, swelling, and increase your risk of permanent tooth loss.

When dealing with this amount of pain, it’s natural to wonder how fast a root canal is. Keep reading to find out the answer.

AVERAGE ROOT CANAL LENGTH

In most cases, a root canal procedure can be done in just one visit and can take anywhere between 60-90 minutes on average.

However, this can depend on several factors, such as:

Your anatomy - A root canal procedure involves using special tools to remove all the infected tissue from the narrow chambers of the tooth, known as the canals. Sometimes, the tooth’s natural anatomy may make the procedure more difficult, in which case you could need multiple visits;
The size of the infection - If the infection is large and has already started to spread, you may need to take antibiotics for a few days, before the tooth can be properly cleaned and disinfected. Antibiotics may be taken orally, but in some cases, they could be applied directly to the tooth;
Existing damage - Once the infected tissue is removed, the tooth has a permanent hole. Sometimes, if the hole isn’t too big, you may get a dental filling to restore the tooth, which can be applied during your initial visit. But, if the damage is severe, you could need a dental crown instead.

HOW LONG DOES ROOT CANAL RECOVERY TAKE?

Usually, healing after a root canal is a fairly straightforward process. The procedure is done under local anesthetic or sedation, so you will likely not feel anything for a few hours after your visit.

Once these effects wear off, you can start feeling a bit of pain and noticing swelling. The symptoms should get gradually better in just a few days.

If your root canal is more complex and you need antibiotics, unfortunately, it’s possible to still experience pain 4-5 days after your initial visit. Your body is still fighting the infection.

WHAT DOES ROOT CANAL AFTERCARE LOOK LIKE?

Following a root canal, you should:

Continue to brush and floss your teeth;
Take any medications you’re prescribed, as indicated;
Chew on the other side of your mouth for a few days, until the discomfort disappears;
Opt for softer foods like mashed potatoes and yogurt the first day after your treatment.

WHAT NOT TO DO AFTER A ROOT CANAL – MISTAKES TO AVOID AFTER TREATMENT

Despite what pop culture may have you believe, getting a root canal is a simple, pain-free procedure, and it usually takes only 30-60 minutes to treat your tooth at ONE ENDO.

However, once you get your treatment, there are some things you should do to keep your tooth healthy, and some things you should avoid as you heal. Wondering what NOT to do after you get your root canal? Here are a few things you should avoid after treatment.

1. AVOID EATING FOR A COUPLE HOURS AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

After your treatment at ONE ENDO, we recommend that you don’t eat until your mouth is no longer numb. If you eat while your mouth is numb, there’s a good chance that you’ll accidentally chew on your cheek, which can cause bleeding, as well as some discomfort once your numbing wears off.

Once your numbing wears off, though, you can eat right away. If you want your numbing to wear off more quickly, you can go for a brisk walk. Getting your blood flowing with some mild exercise will help the numbing wear off faster.

NON-SURGICAL ROOT CANAL

You can chew with whichever side of your mouth you want. However, the tooth that was treated with a root canal may still feel a little bit sore and tender for a few days. So to avoid discomfort, it’s better to favor the opposite side of your mouth when possible.

3. DON’T EAT HARD OR CRUNCHY FOODS FOR A FEW DAYS

You should avoid really hard and crunchy foods like tortilla chips, potato chips, and pretzels for a few days after your treatment. These foods can cause a lot of pain and discomfort when you chew, since they place a lot of pressure on your teeth.

Instead, you should eat soft foods that are easy to chew for a few days, until your sensitivity starts to subside. Soup, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pasta, scrambled eggs, applesauce, rice, and other easy-to-chew foods are the best option. Then, over the next few days, you can start incorporating harder and chewier foods back into your diet.

4. NEVER EAT GUMMY OR STICKY FOODS

After your root canal, you will get a temporary filling or crown. This is only meant to protect your tooth for a few weeks, until you can get a permanent crown from ONE ENDO. And while you have your temporary crown or filling, you should not eat any really gummy or sticky foods, like gummy worms, taffy, caramel, and other such foods.

This is because, over time, eating really sticky, gummy foods can pull your filling or crown off of your tooth. If this happens, you’ll have to come back to ONE ENDO to get another temporary to protect your tooth.

You can go back to eating these foods once you get your permanent crown. Permanent crowns are anchored in place very tightly, and won’t loosen when you eat these foods. But until then, avoid sticky and gummy candy and other foods!

5. DON’T IGNORE CONTINUED PAIN AND DISCOMFORT

A little bit of tenderness and pain is normal for a couple days after your root canal as the area around your tooth heals. But if you’re continuing to experience serious pain and sensitivity, don’t wait. Call ONE ENDO right away.

SURGICAL ROOT CANAL

This type of intervention is performed when the non-surgical root canal has failed or when it wasn't enough to save the tooth. This type of surgery is minor, and it is done under local anesthesia as well.

A surgical root canal may also be recommended when the infection or inflammation continues to impact the tooth even after the pulp has been non-surgically removed.

This can happen either because the bacteria has not been properly cleaned before sealing the tooth or new bacteria entered through a new cavity.

A surgical root canal is done through the gum to prevent the tooth's structure from getting damaged.

Dental sedation is a useful tool that helps us alleviate pain and anxiety during dental treatment. It’s very common for people feel distressed and anxious by the thought of going to the dentist.

We may suggest that you try dental sedation to see if it helps the experience be much more tolerable. That being said, there are multiple types of dental sedation, so how do you know which is right for you? Read on to learn more about the different types of sedatives.

WHAT IS LAUGHING GAS?

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is a very mild and safe sedative that is suitable for most patients. Since the risk of this sedative is very low, it’s the preferred method of sedation for most. It is a gas that is inhaled through the nose after we place a nasal mask on you.

The onset of the effects is very quick so within just a few minutes, you’ll notice the effects of the sedative. You don’t have to fast for a very long time beforehand, either. We ask that you eat a light meal about 2 hours before your appointment and that you avoid eating during this 2-hour window.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

The effects of laughing gas include relaxation, a feeling of heaviness, euphoria, or giddiness. You will feel very calm or happy and may even start laughing, but not everyone has this response.

Many people report a tingly feeling in their limbs and they may feel sleepy but remain conscious during the appointment. If you do fall asleep, we can easily wake you up. This is a conscious form of sedation so you will be awake and aware of your surroundings.

HOW LONG DOES LAUGHING GAS LAST?

Laughing gas only lasts for about 5 minutes after we remove the mask. After about 5 minutes, your body would have completely metabolized it and no further remnants of nitrous oxide would be in your body. This means you can return to your normal activities. If you drove to your appointment then you will be able to drive home too.

WHAT IS DEEP SEDATION?

When you get into the realm of sleep dentistry, we’re talking about general anesthesia, which is a more intense form of sedation that puts you to sleep, in a state of unconsciousness. This is usually reserved for more complex procedures like oral surgery which can be traumatic. It can be administered through a mask, a tube, or an IV. Once this sedative is administered, it kicks in instantly, within 30 seconds.

WHAT IS IT LIKE?

You will be completely unconscious during the procedure so you are essentially asleep with no idea of what is going on. You will not feel any pain, cannot respond to anyone, move, or have any sense of your surroundings.

This is helpful for people who have extreme phobias or have experienced trauma in a dental setting. This way, they do not have to experience the procedure and they will wake up feeling as if no time has passed and might be confused.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

General anesthesia is much different than nitrous oxide in that it stays in your system for up to 24 hours. We will move you to a recovery room once the procedure is over and will need to monitor you for a while until you’re cleared to leave.

You will need to be monitored for the rest of the day and need assistance getting up the stairs. You will also need someone to drive you home after the appointment. You will likely feel very sleepy and should rest for the rest of the day. You should not engage in any strenuous activity, as your reflexes will be affected for the next 24 hours.

Your pain will get worse – Your toothache won’t go away on its own. As the nerves inside your tooth continue to die, your pain will only get worse. The pain of a tooth infection can be excruciating, making it impossible to focus on work, school, and other tasks.
Your tooth will die and may fall out – If your infection gets bad enough, the tooth will die. At this point, you may no longer feel pain or discomfort, but the damaged tooth may break, crack, or even fall out of your mouth.
You may need a tooth extraction and replacement – If your tooth doesn’t fall out after it dies, you may need to get a tooth extraction. Once your tooth is removed by the team at ONE ENDO, you’ll need to replace it with a partial denture, a dental bridge, or a dental implant. CAN ROOT CANALS CAUSE A SINUS INFECTION?

Root canal therapy is a common dental procedure done whenever a tooth has a serious root infection. If you’ve had a root canal done on one of your upper teeth and are now experiencing heachaches, pressure, or have a runny nose, you might be wondering whether the procedure caused a sinus infection.

Well, a root canal will not cause a sinus infection, but it is possible to notice the symptoms of it right after getting this dental procedure.

WHY DO I HAVE A SINUS INFECTION AFTER A ROOT CANAL?

Your upper teeth are close to the sinuses, because of this, the bacteria that has caused the tooth infection can sometimes spread to your sinuses, causing a secondary infection. If you notice the symptoms after seeing the dentist, it’s not the root canal procedure causing the infection, but two other potential scenarios:

The bacteria had already reached the sinus before you got the root canal therapy, but the symptoms were not yet apparent;
The root canal therapy was not fully successful and has left bacteria in the tooth, which traveled to the sinus causing the infection.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH SCENARIO APPLIES TO YOU?

A failed root canal therapy is not something anyone wants to go through, but the good news is that if this is the case, the symptoms will be rather obvious:

Continuous swelling
Heightened sensitivity to heat or cold
Tooth discoloration
Tooth pain
Fever in some cases, etc.

Essentially, a failed root canal therapy means your tooth is still infected, so you will experience the same symptoms. If this is the case, you should see a dentist right away and have the bacteria removed, and save the tooth.

If you notice the symptoms of a sinus infection, but without any discomfort in your tooth, then most likely the infection had already spread to the sinus before getting your root canal.

Endodontists and general dentists are both dental experts that have different areas of focus in dentistry. While general dentists are more focused on prevention and restoration to maintain the overall health of your teeth and gums, endodontists are specialists that focus solely on the health of the inside of your tooth, known as the dental pulp.

WHAT DOES A GENERAL DENTIST DO?

A regular dentist must complete a four-year program in dentistry. General dentists are responsible for maintaining the overall health of your teeth and gums. They regularly perform many preventative, restorative, and cosmetic procedures.

The most common procedures performed by a regular dentist include cleanings, oral exams, fillings, and restorative procedures such as fitting teeth with dental crowns, bridges, or dentures. They can also perform more complicated procedures such as root canals and extractions, but not as often as endodontists and it is not their specialty.

WHAT IS AN ENDODONTIST?

An endodontist is a specialist who has undergone additional education and training after their four-year dental school program. Endodontists specialize in the health of your tooth’s pulp and roots, for which they receive an additional 2-3 years of education.

Endodontic treatment involves repairing damage to the inside of the tooth, known as the tooth’s pulp. Dental pulp can be damaged due to inflammation or infection from severe decay or the tooth becoming cracked.

The most common procedure performed by endodontists is a root canal, which involves removing the damaged pulp from the tooth and filling the tooth back up with a rubber material known as gutta-percha. The tooth is then sealed and usually fitted with a dental crown to protect the vulnerable tooth from becoming damaged.

Other procedures performed by endodontists include apicoectomies (root end surgery), repairing cracked teeth, dental implant surgery, managing dental trauma, and treating root level infections.

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A SPECIALIST?

You should visit a general dentist every 6 months to maintain good oral health and prevent the formation of tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. However, some things are out of the scope of a general dentist’s expertise, one of them being root canals.

While many general dentists do offer and perform root canals, they perform them at a rate of about 2 per week in comparison to endodontists who perform about 25 a week. Your regular dentist will sometimes give you a referral to an endodontist if they think you need a specialist who has more training to perform endodontic treatment successfully.

Regular dentists and endodontists often work in tandem to ensure that you’re in good oral health. If your dentist is not comfortable or does not feel they are experienced enough to handle your root canal treatment, they may refer you to an endodontist to perform the bulk of the treatment.

Endodontists have more experience, training, advanced technology, and are also specialists in pain management. You will then likely return to your dentist for the restorative portion of the treatment, where you receive a dental crown.
